The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s swimming teams, both ranked No. 3 in the CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Coaches poll, face the No. 1 ranked squads from UC San Diego, today at the Canyonview Aquatics Center in San Diego, Calif.
“This should be a very good test for our men and women swimmers,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “UCSD's men and women are both the top-ranked team in D-II and the meet will feature some of the very best swimmers in D-II.”
The men enter the meet having swum a highly successful meet at the Husky Invitational in Federal Way, Wash. last month.
“If our guys can step up, on paper at least, we have a chance of winning the meet despite the diving disadvantage,” added Schaffer. “But we will need to swim well in every event and can't afford for anyone to have an off day,”
Since it is a home meet for UCSD, they will have two diving events (1-meter and 3-meter) on the schedule. That will give them a 32-0 advantage since GCU does not currently have a facility to compete in diving events.
Some of the key events to keep a close watch on will be the 100 and 200 breast events. In the 100 breast, UCSD's Nicholas Korth is currently ranked No. 1 in D-II and will face GCU's
Eetu Karvonen and
Brian Morrison, ranked No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. In the 200 breast, Karvonen and Morrison are ranked No. 2 and 5, while Korth is third.
The 200 fly will feature the nation’s current bests as UCSD's No.1 ranked Dane Stassi will swim against the ‘Lopes’
Ivan Nechunaev, ranked No. 2.
The highlight of the meet could be the 200 free relay event that will close out the meet. GCU enters this event with the top-ranked squad in D-II.
“The dual between the men has all the makings of one of the top dual meets in D-II this season,” said Schaffer.
“On the women's side of the competition, we are hoping to have our best performance ever against UCSD,” said Schaffer. “We are about a year away from being able to give them a real challenge. They have probably the best all-around swimmer in D-II in Alexandra Henley and they are deep in almost every event.”
Canyon's
Mychala Lynch has recorded the top-ranked time in the 100 fly and will be the favorite in that event. She also has the fifth-best time in the 50 free.
GCU's
Inha Kotsur is No. 5 in the 1000 free and is looking to repeat her victory in that event last year.
“Last year the women scored 87 points against UCSD,” said Schaffer. “Today we set the goal of scoring 100 or more against them this year. If we can do that, it will have been a very successful meet for us.”
Both squads will return to California on Jan.21, when they will face Biola in La Mirada, Calif.
