The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s swimming teams will open the 2011-12 season this weekend when Incarnate Word visits today and tomorrow. The meets will be held at the
Dottie Boreyko/Brophy Sports Campus in Phoenix.
The Antelopes are coming off their most successful season in the program’s history, with the men finishing fourth and the women 10
th at the NCAA Championships.
The men return six swimmers who earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships last season. The squad also finished a school-best second at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
The women also return six NCAA All-American swimmers and finished second at the RMAC Championships.
Steve Schaffer enters his fourth season at the helm of the GCU swimming programs after being named the 2011 NCAA Division II Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year and the RMAC Women’s Coach of the Year.
The season kicks of today at 6 p.m. in a Relay Meet between the ‘Lopes and Incarnate Word. Saturday will showcase the two schools competing in a Pentathlon format, with a Short Medley, Long Medley and Freestyle event on the schedule.
