The ‘Lopes have set a new bar for excellence in the women’s golf program after racking-up their accomplishments this season. The team had four tournament wins, the most of any GCU women’s team in a single season. The previous record was three set during the 2004-05 season.
In addition to four tournament titles, Grand Canyon had four individual medalists for the season. Junior Brittany Penny (Peoria, AZ, Centennial (Winthrop University)) won the first tournament of the season, the Northern Arizona University Mountain Shootout in Flagstaff. Freshman Tiffany Hewetson (Brighton, England, Longhell) was tournament medalist at the Dennis Rose Invitational in Waikoloa, HI. Junior Ashley Mooney (Port Saint Lucie, FL, Cheista McAuliffe (Daytona State College)) tied for first at the GCU Spring Invitational in Goodyear, and Phoeba Cipa (Upminster, England, Coopers Company and Coborn) was medalist at the Arizona Christian University Invite.
“It’s great to have four different players be tournament medalists,” said head coach Don Powers. Most teams have a standout player but Grand Canyon has proven to be a well-rounded team.
For the second year in a row, the team qualified for the super regional tournament, earning the best performance in program history with a fifth place finish, just shy of qualifying for the national tournament as a team. The 2010 regional tournament was the first time the women’s golf team qualified for a regional and placed eighth overall.
While the team did not qualify, Hewetson placed fifth overall at the regional tournament and became only the third women’s golfer to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship tournament in GCU history. She is the first to do so as a freshman and had the best finish in school history, tied for 23rd overall.
“I am really impressed with Tiffany’s game; she has come a long way. She was in-and-out of the top five, battling all season but really played well at the regional tournament.” Hewetson’s performance at the regional tournament earned her a spot on the all-region team for the west region. She is one of six selected.
“The one word to describe her at the end of the season is solid. She struck the ball well, she putted well, she was just an all-around solid player.”
Coach Powers is now looking to the next season. With a handful of new recruits, he says there won’t be a stand out player. “It’s going to be a battle. They are all strong players and it is really going to be a battle to see which girls are going to step-up.”
