Grand Canyon University recruit Brittany Penny played well at the 80th Women's TRANS National Golf Association Amateur Championship at The Country Club of Lincoln in Lincoln, Neb.
Penny, who will compete at GCU this fall after transferring from Winthrop, was 16th out of 105 golfers following the 36-hole round-play portion of the tournament. She was 7-over-par after rounds of 77 (+5) and 74 (+2).
She qualified for match play and defeated Taylor Babcock of Barry University 5 and 4 before falling 2 up to Chelsea Stelzmiller of UC Davis.
Penny, a former high school state champion at Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial, was the Big South Freshman of the Year and all-conference selection during her lone campaign at Winthrop.
The TRANS comes from the words original meaning of across the Mississippi. When the WTNG started in 1926, all clubs bordering the Mississippi River were the original members.
