Junior shoots 78 to wrap up tournament
MESA – Grand Canyon University junior Georgina Dunn (Peterborough, England , King's School) shot a final round 7-over-par 78 and finished tied for 34th in the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships at Longbow Golf Club Saturday.
Dunn finished 30-over-par (77-76-83-78 – 314) for the tournament. She is only the second player in GCU history to play in the championships. Jessica McKay finished 26th in 2008.
“It was fun and nice to experience it,” said Dunn of her four-day, 72-hole tournament. “I played OK. I had higher expectations and I want to do better next year.”
Twelve teams (of five golfers each) and 12 more individuals began the quest for a national championship on Wednesday.
“It was a fabulous week,” said GCU coach Marc Chandonnet. “It’s harder when you’re by yourself. Georgina was the only one (from our team) to get here and that’s an amazing accomplishment.”
Nova Southeastern, the defending national champion, won the event with a four-round total of 1,180, 40 strokes better than runner-up Rollins., NSU’s Sandra Changkija, the 2009 national runner-up, erased a final-day four-stroke deficit to win the individual title at even-par (74-67-71-72 – 284).
