Antelopes place second at GCU Invitational

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Seventeenth-ranked Grand Canyon placed second in the GCU Invitational at Palm Valley Golf Club Tuesday.
GCU knocked nine strokes off its third place first-round score (316) to card a 307 for the day and finish with a 623 overall, two strokes better than No. 8 CSU-Monterey Bay and four shots ahead of No. 13 Sonoma State.
Tarleton State, ranked No. 5 in the nation, won the event. It was the only team to shoot under 300 both rounds, finishing with a 592 (298-294). Tarleton's Carla Cooper was the lone golfer to shoot under par with a two-round total of 137 (-7).
GCU junior Brittany Anderson (Goodyear, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) finished fourth with a 9-over-par 153 (76-77). Senior Jennifer Lutz (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa/Mesa) tied for eighth at 11-over-par (81-74 -- 155). Her 2-over-par round Tuesday was the 'Lopes best of the tournament.
The 17-team tournament included nine teams ranked in the Top 25 and four others receiving votes. Other ranked teams participating (with tournament finish in parenthesis) were: No. 9 Western Washington (7th), No. 10 St. Edwards (5th), No. 21 Central Oklahoma (11th), No. 25, tied Northeastern State (9th) and No. 25, tied West Texas A&M (6th). The teams receiving votes include Western New Mexico (8th), St. Martin's (10th), Academy of Art (12th) and Chico State (13th).
For GCU, junior Georgina Dunn (Peterborough, England/King's School/New Mexico State) finished tied for 25th (80-80 -- 160). Freshman Alexandra Malmsjo (Stockholm, Sweden/Saltsjobaden) tied for 34th (79-83 -- 162). Junior Jacqueline Sneddon (Meigle, Scotland/Madras College/Elmwood College) was also among the group tied for 34th (86-76 -- 162).
