LA JOLLA, Calif. -- In a battle of national power men's swim teams, No. 15 Grand Canyon lost dual meets to No. 2 Incarnate Word and No. 6 UC San Diego Sunday.
GCU lost a close one, 159-124 to Incarnate Word, a team it will meet again next month in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships in Arvada, Colo. The 'Lopes lost 197-84 to UCSD.
The men won four individual events. Freshman Johan Ivarsson (Sundsvall, Sweden/Sundsvall) won the 200 Freestyle (1:43.76) and 200 Backstroke (1:57.68). ![]()
GCU junior Ralph Herberg (Potsdam, Germany/Sportschule/Potsdam) won the 100 Breaststroke (58.99) and junior Artem Tretiakov (pictured, Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk National University) won the 50 Freestyle (21.01), edging UCSD's Dan Perdew (21.03), last year's NCAA runner-up in the 50 and champion in the 100.
Herberg set a new school mark and was second in the 200 Breaststroke (2:10.19). Tretiakov was runner-up in the 100 Freestyle (46.81). Freshman Richie Krzyzanowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle) was second in the 200 Butterfly (1:57.12).
GCU's final home meet before the RMAC Championships is Jan. 30 against Biola. Start time is 1:30 p.m. at the Brophy Sports Complex.
