Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawaii – Grand Canyon men's golf finished its first round on the island of Kaua'i Thursday afternoon in the yearly John A. Burns Intercollegiate tournament.
DAY ONE RESULTS
In a 19-team field, GCU is tied for 15th through 18 holes at 11 over par. Sixteen of the 19 programs finished over par for the day, with the field consisting of seven teams ranked top 45 in the Clippd Scoreboard rankings.
The annual tournament is being hosted by Ocean Course Hokuala, playing at 7,156 yards and par 70.
Starting in shotgun format, GCU's first nine holes saw just three birdies with starting holes ranging from 7-9. Strokes were gained however when the card flipped back to the front as four birdies an eagle were recorded between holes 1-4, ending the day on a promising note heading into Friday's round two.
Sophomore
Matthew Diehl led the Lopes with an even 70. Diehl had two birdies, two bogeys, and 14 pars to his name with back-to-back birdies on holes one and two. His even scorecard is tied for 21st out of 111 golfers.
Junior
Gavin O'Neill and sophomore
Nixon Lauritzen shot 73's and are tied for 58th at 3 over. O'Neill also had consecutive birdies on holes three and four, where Lauritzen had two birdies in and an eagle on his scorecard. The California native is one of 12 golfers to notch an eagle on day one.
Freshman
Daniel Nilsson (5 over) and Måns Boje (6 over) rounded out the group in 77th and 89th, respectively. Nilsson and Diehl's 14 pars each are tied for fourth most in the field.
Sophomore
Trey Moore, who competed as an individualist, was the third of three Lopes to have two straight birdies on the early holes. He finished the day at 9 over par.
Loyola Marymount leads the way at 4 under, followed by No. 32 Texas A&M at 3 under and No. 42 Long Beach State at 2 under. Utah's Sergio Jimenez, ranked No. 75 in the nation, is the field's leader at 4 under through 18 holes.
Round two continues tomorrow afternoon with tee times to be determined.
