FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Grand Canyon wrapped up its second trip to Northern Arizona by sending a small squad to the NAU Lumberjack Team Challenge on Friday.
The Lopes still had standouts, including junior
Weston Means winning the high jump with a personal-best leap of 2.09 meters (6 feet, 10 1/4 inches) that ranks 36th in Division I.
GCU swept the podium in the event with
Blake Heller and Elliott George securing second and third places.
The Lopes men's pole vaulters also took the top three spots, led by junior
Gavin Dimick taking first with a vault of 4.85 meters (15 feet, 11 inches) on his first attempt. Senior
Misael Colon cleared the same height on his second attempt to place second, and junior
Quintin Dukes took third at 4.7 meters (15 feet, 5 inches).
GCU junior
Chloe Metz won the women's pole vault as the only competitor, clearing 3.55 meters (11 feet, 7 3/4 inches).
To wrap up the meet, the Lopes women's distance runners broke multiple personal records. Freshman Lauren Pahl finished the mile run in 5 minutes, 19.91 seconds to finish first in her heat.
Freshman duo June Zimmerman and Carina Trujillo and sophomore
Eva Johnson also scored personal bests in the mile.
In the women's 800-meter run, senior Morgan Lamberson finished second in 2:14.33, breaking her personal record. Sophomore Grace Scott finished first in her heat handily while breaking her personal record in 2:21.91.
Looking ahead, a Lopes full squad will head to Albuquerque, New Mexico, next weekend for the UNM MLK Jr. Invitational.
