Lowder breaks GCU record, sets multiple personal bests
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Lopes started 2026 with a successful Friday night indoor meet a Northern Arizona in the Friday Night Axe 'Em Open.
"Overall, I am very pleased with our performances," GCU head coach Tom Flood said. "We definitely busted off some rust in our first meet of the new year.
"This event was a great test for the Lopes and gave them the ability to try some new things out. We still held out several athletes this week and ran a lot in odd events this early in the season."
Despite holding out some athletes this week, the trend of a GCU record being broken continued.
Standout junior transfer Eva Lowder, a transfer from Washington State, broke her previous record of 4.25 meters in the pole vault by reaching 4.27 on Friday.
This height carried her to victory in the event while also securing the fifth-highest vault in Mountain West history.
Lopes senior Taliyah Booker competed well in the 400-meter run, winning the event in 54.34 seconds for the sixth-best time in the nationa and second-best time in the Mountain West.
Jacob Holguin also had a great showing in the 60 to start his season. He finished with his personal-best time of 6.67 to rank 13th in Division I.
In the men's 1-mile run, the Grand Canyon duo of junior Tristen Coyle and sophomore Jack Sindt dominated.
Coyle finished in 4 minutes, 21.59 seconds, and Sindt followed in 4:25.20. Both times were personal bests to take the race's top two spots.
"Best thing is we came out completely healthy after the meet was completed." Flood said, "We will get back to work again on Monday and look to get even better again next Friday at NAU."
The Lopes will head back to Flagstaff this Friday to compete in the Lumberjack Team Challenge.
