The reigning WAC Freshman of the Year has begun his sophomore season with a monumental achievement.

Matthew Diehl qualified for the 125th U.S. Open Amateur Championship after carding an even-par scorecard at the U.S. Amateur Final Qualifying in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
The U.S. Open Amateur Championship will be held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco from Aug. 11-17.
Diehl turned in an impressive freshman campaign that saw him earn honors on the All-WAC first team to go along with his WAC Freshman of the Year award. Diehl was named a Rolex Junior All-America honorable mention prior to his 2024-25 GCU season.
Diehl's freshman campaign ncluded a team-best 72.2 scoring average, an individual title at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (14 under), four top-10 finishes and the best showing of any Lopes golfer in an NCAA regional in program history (tied for 7th, 3 under).
From Redlands, California, Diehl was one of 13 qualifiers from the Rancho Santa Fe qualifying tournament to advance to the championship. Diehl shot a 71 with two birdies and an eagle, making him one of the two golfers among 13 qualifiers to eagle a hole.
Past U.S. Open Amateur Championship winners include José Luis Ballester in 2024, Nick Dunlap in 2023 and Sam Bennett in 2022. Other names through the years include Viktor Hovland (2018), Bryson DeChambeau (2015), Matt Fitzpatrick (2013) and Tiger Woods, who won the prestigious event three straight times (1994-96).
