Grand Canyon freshman
Matthew Diehl tied for the opening-day lead at the 96-golfer  Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, sparking the Lopes to a fourth-place tie through 1 1/2 rounds with his 9-under scorecard Saturday in Scottsdale.
The 54-hole tournament was slated to have two rounds Saturday and the third and final round Sunday. However, due to rain in the area Friday, first-round play was pushed back Saturday morning and left most teams on their ninth or 10th holes of the second round when play was halted.
GCU is tied for fourth at 1 over with No. 48 Kansas and Pacific. No. 27 Mississippi State leads the field at 12 under, followed by No, 10 Utah at 2 under and Minnesota at 1 under.
Diehl stormed out of the gates with six birdies through his first nine holes, including three over his first three holes. He saw his score go to 7 under at one point before finishing the round with a 4-under 68. His second round was starting just as good as the first, carding an eagle on his second hole (No. 9) and notching three birdies over the nine holes that played to go into Sunday with a 9-under scorecard.
GCU graduate
Tommaso Zorzetto sank five birdies over his first round, finishing the morning slate at 3 over. Senior teammate
Kiko Coelho had three birdies and finished one shot behind Zorzetto at 4 over after 18 holes.
Zorzetto is 3 over for the tournament and tied for 37th, followed by Coelho (4 over, tied for 41st), sophomore
Gavin O'Neill (6 over, tied for 54th) and freshman
Campbell Kerr (8 over, tied for 70th). O'Neill had the second eagle of the day for the Lopes, making a 3 on the par-5, 616-yard No. 13 hole.
Lopes junior
Antonio Bulgheroni is tied for 50th at 5 over as an individual entry.
Second-round action resumes Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
