TUCSON, Ariz. — Grand Canyon's outdoor track and field season kicked into high gear over the weekend with its first large meet, the Willie Williams Classic, on Friday and Saturday.
"It was nice to finally have the whole team together and officially start our outdoor season," GCU head coach Tom Flood said.
GCU senior
Lucy George made Friday night headlines by setting the school's javelin record. Her mark of 46.05 meters beat the previous record of 45.15 meters set by
Sophia Saldutto in 2024.
"We started off right away with a bang on Friday with Lucy's school record in the javelin," Flood said.
Graduate
Daviciea McCartney and junior
Miguel Rosario III were busy in multiple events.
"I thought that
Daviciea McCartney (400-meter hurdles and 110 hurdles) and Miguel Rosario (200 and 100) had very nice doubles in their outdoor openers," Flood said.
McCartney won the 400 hurdles event with a time of 50.69 seconds, and he posted a time of 14.03 seconds in the 110 hurdles. Rosario posted the best time among the meet's collegiate competitors in the 200 (20.85), and he clocked a 10.39 in the 100.
Several other Lopes were impressive in their outdoor debuts.
"I also thought that
Taliyah Booker (400), Germain Lemaître (800) and
Michaela Lewis (800) posted some very nice early-season performances in the outdoor debuts," Flood said. "
Jazmine Scott had a nice jump in the triple jump and our men's 4x100 relay (
Jacob Holguin, Rosario,
JoJo Harding,
Conner Kittleson) opened up the season with a nice sub-40 second performance."
Booker posted a 53.79 in the 400. Lemaitre won the meet's 800 run with a mark of 1:49.79, within 1.22 seconds of the school record he set last year. Lewis ran the 800 in 2:11.50. Scott finished second in the triple jump, measuring at 12.42 meters. The 4x100 relay ran a 39.76, less than a half-second off the school record from 2023.
"We will take a small but elite group of athletes this upcoming week to the prestigious Texas Relays," Flood said. "Can't wait to get back at it and get even better next week."
The Texas Relays is a four-day event in Austin, beginning on Wednesday.
