Grand Canyon is headed to Spokane, Washington, to compete in the 2025 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The two-day event will take place on Friday and Saturday at The Podium where the Lopes will aim to win their eighth men's championship and seventh women's championship.
"I am very excited and confident in both of our teams' ability to have very successful WAC Indoor Championships meets again this year," GCU head coach Tom Flood said. "All the WAC schools have had long traditions of excellence in track and field and are always very tough competition."
Other WAC coaches agree with Flood's assessment, as the Lopes were picked to finish first and second on the men's and women's side, respectively.
Of the 34 events set to be contested (17 for each gender), GCU enters with the WAC's top marks in six men's events and five women's events. The Lopes hold top-three marks in four more men's events and three more women's events.
GCU topped the men's pre-championship polling with Utah Valley and UT Arlington trailing behind.
Â
"Our men's team again is very well balanced with good depth in most event areas, especially the 60 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 60-meter hurdles and multis," Flood said. "We have a good mixture of senior leadership and some very talented newcomers."
On the women's side, GCU was sandwiched between first-place Utah Valley and third-place Tarleton State in the poll.
Â
"Our women's team is also very talented this year with a lot of outstanding newcomers," Flood said. "We should be right in the hunt for a team title, but as always will need some help from other schools to break up UVU in the distance races.
Â
"Everyone here is ready to leave it all out on the track and fight until the last event to keep our winning track and field tradition alive."
GCU's men claimed seven consecutive indoor championships before Southern Utah broke up the streak last season. The GCU women, however, did get the job done and claimed the program's sixth women's indoor title.
Â
"Both teams know that no one is going to just hand them anything and that they are going to have to fight for every point they get," Flood said. "As always, we will have to battle in every single event to the best of our abilities and let the games committee keep track of the team scores."
The Lopes traveled to Spokane on Wednesday and will get time in the facility on Thursday before events begin at 10 a.m. (Phoenix time) on Friday. Events are scheduled to conclude around 8 p.m. (Phoenix time) on Saturday where two new WAC champions will be officially crowned.
Â
"Hopefully, if it's God's will, we will be traveling back home with some additional hardware that I'll try my best to find some additional spots somewhere in my office," said Flood, who has led GCU to 23 WAC Championships between men's and women's indoor and outdoor events.
The event will feature
