The GCU Golf Course played tough in hotter-than-normal February weather on Tuesday afternoon, but with familiarity to the course and heat, Grand Canyon roared back to overtake UC Irvine for a two-stroke lead through two rounds in the GCU Invitational.
GCU sits at 5 under overall, carding a 4-under first round and a 1-under second round. It leads UC Irvine by two strokes after the Anteaters had reached 11 under overall before finishing Tuesday at 3 under through 36 holes. Findlay, the nation's No. 2Â team in Division II, is third at 7 over.
GCU
Calynne Rosholt, a graduate student, is the field's overall leader at 4 under par, shooting 2 under in each of the first two rounds. Rosholt tallied 10 birdies for her day, including four over her last nine holes to help lead the Lopes' second-round charge. Her 10 birdies are second most among the 76-player field.
Lopes sophomore
Jess Haines is two shots back of Rosholt and tied for third at 2 under. Haines led the squad at 3 under through her first 18 with a bogey-free first round. She notched six birdies for her day and held the overall lead with four holes to play Tuesday.
GCU senior
Anci Dy is tied for 13th with a 1-over card. Dy recorded seven birdies over the two rounds and locked in on the back nine of her second round, totaling two birdies, one bogey and six pars. Sophomore teammate
Brenna Preap and junior
Lena Tremouille are tied for 16th at 2 over, with both registering five birdies and Tremouille adding the Lopes' only eagle on the 18th hole. Â
Lopes freshman
Matilda Samervong (12 over, tied for 62nd) and junior
Amelia Curtis (13 over, tied for 65th) also competed as individuals.
As a team, GCU totaled 41 birdies and 156 pars.
