Facing a 2-1 deficit with 10 minutes to spare against one of four first-place teams in the WAC, Grand Canyon once again found second-half magic off the foot of freshman phenom
Junior Diouf, who converted an 85th-minute penalty Thursday night to seal a 2-2 draw with Utah Tech at GCU Stadium.
Both teams entered Thursday tied for first in the league standings at seven points with California Baptist and San Diego State. The Lopes and Trailblazers each earned a point and moved into a tie for second with San José State. The trio trails California Baptist by two points with two regular-season games remaining.
Making his second start of the season, GCU junior
Allan Rosales scored first midway through the first half, taking a pass from freshman
Jack Kiefer and striking a low, left-footed line drive three steps outside the 18-yard box.
The one-goal lead lasted less than five minutes, as Utah Tech (3-6-5, 2-1-2 WAC) scored on a penalty kick by Taylor Rogers in the 35th minute for one of the Trailblazers' four first-half shots.
Rogers was a key piece to give Utah Tech a second-half lead in the 65th minute. Rogers' shot was saved by reigning WAC Goalkeeper of the Week
Daniel Ibarra. The ball bounced off Ibarra's hands, with the rebound landing on the foot of another Utah Tech forward (Mitch Williams), who scored the go-ahead goal.
GCU had its chances late in the second half, totaling nine shots to its six in the first 45 minutes. Diouf flashed his footwork and a quick shot on multiple occasions, seeing a ground ball shot miss inches from the right post and a volley attempt saved by a Utah Tech defender.
But the final shot proved to be the difference maker. Diouf took a pass from graduate forward
Ben Assane and dribbled his way into the box. Upon entry, the freshman was tripped and fell to the turf, forcing the referee to award a 85th-minute penalty kick. Diouf converted, his second penalty kick goal of the season, and added his 12th goal of the season. The 12 goals in one campaign ties Diouf with Shaun Joash (2022) for second most in a GCU season in the program's Division I era.
GCU returns to action Sunday for an afternoon contest at Air Force. The matchup will not be streamed.
