GCU, Utah Tech open soccer doubleheader with 4 p.m. home match

With three games left in the regular season, Grand Canyon has a pivotal Thursday afternoon matchup against Utah Tech in a battle of first-place teams. The Lopes and Trailblazers are tied for first with seven points each, joining San Diego State and California Baptist in a four-way tie for the top WAC Tournament seed.Â
The Lopes are 7-1-1 at home this season, with its only loss coming against SMU in a game where leading scorer Junior Diouf did not play.Â
GCU owns an RPI of No. 41, its season high and second best in the WAC to California Baptist. The Lopes are 0-2-1 against Quad 1 and 2 opponents and 8-0-1 against Quad 3 and 4 teams. Utah Tech's RPI is No. 195 (Quad 4).Â
Graduate forward Ben Assane became the Lopes' ninth goal scorer this season with a first-half goal against San José State on Saturday. Assane is second on the team in points (seven) and is fourth in the WAC for assists (five).Â
Freshman forward Junior Diouf is top 10 in the nation in goals (11) and points (26), putting himself in national conversation as a MAC Hermann Trophy Midseason Watch List recipient. Diouf also was named the nationa's No. 1 Freshman at the top of the TopDrawerSoccer Top 100 Freshmen to Watch.
Graduate goalkeeper Daniel Ibarra tallied three saves against the Spartans in his most recent game, earning WAC Co-Goalkeeper of the Week honors. Ibarra is eighth in the country in save percentage (.854) and 20th in goals against average (0.67). The Lopes have outscored its opposition 21-10 and have never allowed more than one goal in any game this season. Â
GCU is 8-3-2, and a ninth win would be its most since the 2021 squad that won 15 games and made the NCAA Tournament. It would be the third team since 2018 to win at least nine matches.Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Lopes tied San José State 1-1 on Saturday to move to 8-3-2 overall and 7-1-1 at home.Â
Assane scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Diouf, who tallied his 26th point of the 2025 campaign.Â
GCU extended its streak of not allowing more than a goal to 13 consecutive games.Â
SCOUTING UTAH TECH
The Trailblazers are 3-6-4 overall and 2-1-1 in the WAC with seven points in the regular-season standings. Utah Tech is one of four teams tied for first with three games to play.Â
Utah Tech is 4-1-1 over its last six games, including a 1-1-1 showing over its last three.
The Trailblazers own a WAC-leading .459 shot accuracy mark, which ranks 43rd in the nation.Â
Taylor Rogers leads the way with five goals, fourth most in the conference. He also has a team-high 13 points.Â
Utah Tech is 0-5-3 away from its home stadium this season. Â
