The Grand Canyon track and field program has gained more recognition and hardware for its success during this year's outdoor season in the WAC with Lopes head coach
Tom Flood
being named WAC Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year along with GCU senior
Daviciea McCartney winning WAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
Under Flood's leadership, the Lopes men's team has won the conference outdoor title in four consecutive seasons. It is the WAC outdoor four-peat by a men's team since BYU's streak of nine consecutive championships ended in 1993.
This year's WAC title came by GCU winning with a 28-point margin over runner-up Southern Utah.
The honor marks Flood's 25th Coach of the Year award, with this being his sixth award for the WAC men's outdoor season. Most recently, Flood won the 2024 WAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year award.

McCartney, a native of Mesquite, Texas, takes his honor after securing a victory in the 110-meter hurdles at the WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where he clocked in at 13.69 seconds.
His remarkable achievement not only set a new school record but also shattered a 30-year-old WAC record in the event. The senior then showcased his talent again, claiming a come-from-behind win in the 400-meter hurdles. McCartney grabbed his second WAC title in the event with another GCU record time of 49.99 seconds.
The Lopes also are sending a program-best four athletes (800-meter runner
Joanna Archer, pole vaulter
Jack Hodge, hammer thrower
Israel Oloyede and decathlete
Casey Tow) to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships next week in Eugene, Oregon.
