AUSTIN, Texas – The Grand Canyon men's golf team finished the second round of the NCAA Austin Regional at University of Texas Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lopes shot 11 over par Tuesday to be 22 over for the tournament and tied for 12th entering Wednesday's final round. At 22 under, host school Texas holds a 10-stroke lead over second-place Tennessee, followed by Notre Dame in third place at 10 under. BYU (6 under) and Utah (even) round out the top five, with the top five teams of the regional advancing to the NCAA Championship.
"The course was playing really firm with fast greens today, but the course is in great shape," GCU head coach
Mark Mueller said. "The goal for tomorrow is to go out and do the very best we possibly can, play to our capability and move up the leaderboard with as many birdies as possible."
GCU, who started Tuesday at hole 10, wiped away four bogeys through the first three holes with four birdies between holes 13 and 14 but couldn't find consistency throughout the round. The team carded 14 birdies, led by junior
Josh McCabe, who shot 2 over with five birdies to his name. McCabe is tied for 58th at 7 over.
Lopes freshman
Gavin O'Neill had a team-best second round of 1 under and is 2 over for the tournament to tie for 37th. O'Neill shot even par through his front nine and had three birdies on the day. GCU senior
Tommaso Zorzetto is tied for 45th after a 3-over Tuesday card. Zorzetto finished strong and shot 1 under over his final eight holes with two birdies.
GCU seniors
Nicky Kling and
Matthew Pennington are tied for 65th at 10 over for the tournament.
The Lopes will conclude the regional tournament Wednesday morning starting on hole 1 at 6:55 a.m. (Phoenix time).
