AUSTIN, Texas – Monday's first round of the NCAA Austin Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club began Monday with overcast skies that quickly turned into lightning and rain as GCU concluded its round after nearly six hours of play.
The Lopes finished the first round 12th among 13 regional teams after an 11-over-par round. Host Texas leads the field at 11 under, followed by Notre Dame (9 under) and Tennessee (8 under). The top five teams after Wednesday's final round will qualify for the NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, California. Currently, Georgia holds an 11-stroke advantage over GCU for fifth place with an even-par Monday.
Rain started to fall at the turn for the Lopes, who began the day at hole 10. Lightning soon followed and play was halted at 12:30 p.m. local time for 2 1/2 hours before resuming at 3:05 p.m.
GCU senior
Tommaso Zorzetto and freshman
Gavin O'Neill each carded 1-over scores and are tied for 32nd. Zorzetto was one of three Lopes with three birdies, starting his day at 2 under through his first four holes before finishing with a birdie on the ninth hole. O'Neill, the first Lopes freshman to play in an NCAA regional, sank two birdies and went even par over his final nine holes.
GCU senior
Nicky Kling is tied for 54th at 4 over, followed by junior
Josh McCabe (tied for 60th, 5 over) and senior
Matthew Pennington (tied for 66th, 6 over).
The second round begins Tuesday morning with the final round on Wednesday.
