OREM, Utah. — The Grand Canyon track and field team had strong performances Friday despite the non-ideal conditions. The Lopes currently sit in second in both the men's and women's competitions.
GCU was named conference champions in the heptathlon thanks to
Summer Grubbs alongside
Megan Williams who was able to score despite this being her debut in the event. The results earned the Lopes 11 points.
Grubbs also placed sixth in the women's long jump along with
Jazmine Scott who took eighth for four big points.
In the men's decathlon,
Casey Tow took first place alongside teammates
Blayk Kelton (sixth) and
Jackson Smith (seventh) who were able to take 15 points for the Lopes.
GCU swept the Friday hammer events thanks to
Jorden Okyere on the men's side and
Onome Ogbeni in the women's. Okyere threw a school record of 17.92 meters in the finals to secure the victory.
Along with Ogbeni's win,
Olivia Austin,
Alyssa Walls, and
Lucy George went fourth, fifth, and sixth for a total of 22 team points.
Other valuable points came from
Austin Atencio (third) and
John Twedt (sixth) for nine points by way of the long jump final.
Emmanuel Corral picked up a very prized point in the Steeplechase.
Senior
Daviciea McCartney broke his own school record in the 110-meter hurdles with a preliminary time of 13.79 to set himself up for Saturday's final.
In the 800 meter preliminaries,
Alex Rafferty earned a spot in the men's final along with the women's
Joanna Archer and Zoë Rich each claiming their Saturday spot.
In the men's 100 meter,
Erin Brown and
JoJo Harding each qualified for the final. Brown had the second fastest time in the conference and won his heat with the 10.37 second mark.
In the women's 100 meter, both
Dawnielle Lewis and
Atena Rayson made it through to the Saturday finals.
The second day at the Championship meet leaves the Lopes with work to do still as the men sit in second behind Utah Valley by seven points. In the women's competition, GCU also sits in second trailing the host Utah Valley. Saturday will leave the chance for the Lopes men to win their fourth straight outdoor championship while the women look to defend the conference indoor title with an outdoor trophy.

Day 1
The Grand Canyon track and field team is off to a promising start after an interesting first day of WAC Championships competition that put the Lopes men in a tie for first and the women in second at Utah Valley.
The throwers got GCU out to a strong start with senior
Hannah Blood (first) and graduate
Alyssa Walls (third) taking 17 points in the hammer to begin the scoring.
The Lopes men's throwers continued the trend with graduate
Israel Oloyede winning the hammer competition and graduate
Jorden Okyere placing second to claim 18 points for the team.
The women's pole vault resulted in 16 points for GCU, led by sophomore
Jaida Olson taking silver along with freshmen
Nicole Prall and
Regan Parnell in fourth and sixth, respecitvely.
After a weather delay, freshman
Sophia Saldutto doubled back from the morning hammer to take bronze in the javelin. Saldutto closed Thursday with a mark just over 143 feet for six points.
In the multi events, decathlete
Casey Tow and hepathlete
Summer Grubbs each set the respective GCU school records this season. The pair, along with their fellow Lopes athletes, positioned themselves well for the second day on Friday.
Senior
Erin Brown broke his GCU record in the 200-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 20.69 seconds.
The Lopes advanced nearly all of their entrants in the running events.
The strong day at the WAC Championships tied the GCU men for first place with 18 points. The Lopes women's team sits in second with 39 points behind Utah Valley, which scored all of its 52 points in the 10,000-meter run. Despite that, the Lopes women will have their opportunities to make up those points.
The action will resume Friday and finish Saturday in Orem, Utah.
