MARICOPA, Ariz. – Grand Canyon jumped out to an early lead at the Cowboy Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club and ended Monday by keeping that first-place lead by seven strokes.
GCU is 27 under par in the 22-team tournament through a round and a half. Monday's second round was cut short due to lightning in the area and will resume Tuesday morning. UNLV is second at 20 under, followed by USC in third at 19 under.
All five Lopes are in the top 30 in a 120-player field, including three GCU golfers in the top 20. Senior
Matthew Pennington leads the Lopes at 7 under par with seven birdies and no bogeys. Pennington tallied five in his first round and has two in his second with five holes to play.

Tommaso Zorzetto is one shot back of Pennington at 6 under. Zorzetto has 11 birdies, second most among the field. After a 3-under first round with five birdies over the course of holes 10-18, Zorzetto is 3 under in his second round with four birdies. Classmate
Craig Passmore is 5 under and tied for 17th with eight birdies and is 3 under and bogey free in his second round.

Gavin O'Neill are tied for 27th at 3 under. Kling had the best first round score for the Lopes, carding a 6 under with seven birdies and an eagle with a stretch of four birdies between holes 1 and 5. O'Neill has seven birdies and eagled the par-5 third hole in his second round, joining Kling as one of three teams with multiple eagles for the tournament.
Second-round action will continue at 7:15 a.m. with the third and final round beginning shortly after the second round concludes.
