STANFORD, Calif. – Beginning its second tournament in an eight-day stretch, Grand Canyon posted a 7-over-par first round score Thursday to be in the middle of the 30-team pack at The Goodwin on Stanford Golf Course.
The Lopes enter Friday's second round tied for 19th place, which is ahead of three teams ranked via Clippd Scoreboard. The field consists of 14 ranked Division I teams with six Mountain West teams competing, serving as a prelude to the Mountain West Championship in early May in Tucson.
Host Stanford leads the field at 11 under while GCU is seven shots back of a top-10 placement with two rounds to go.
Lopes junior
Gavin O'Neill is the squad's clubhouse leader at 1 under, good for 27th overall. O'Neill's only blemish was a double bogey on the par-3 third hole, but he zoned in for nothing but pars and three birdies after that. His 14 pars for the day tied for the second most in the tournament.
GCU sophomore
Nixon Lauritzen carded three birdies and is 1 over for 57th among 160 tournament golfers.
Lopes sophomore Måns Boje is one shot back of Lauritzen at 2 over (72nd), followed by classmate
Matthew Diehl (5 over, 122nd) and freshman
Daniel Nilsson (6 over. 133rd). Boje had a team-best four birdies on his card.
The second round begins Friday afternoon with the Lopes teeing off at 12:05 p.m., and the final round will be playe Saturday.
