BOULDER CITY, Nevada – First place was the theme for the Grand Canyon women's golf team after Day 1 of the Women's Jackrabbit Invitational at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
GCU carded a team score of 7 under par, eight strokes better than second-place South Dakota State, the host school for the two-day tournament. Senior
Carly Strole paced the Lopes with a dominant 36-hole stretch Monday, when she sank 10 birdies and only had four bogeys to take a 6-under score into Tuesday's final round.
Strole holds a three-shot lead over a trio of golfers tied for second. The Goodyear, Arizona, native began her day on the par-4 ninth hole, and after a bogey on No. 10, she never looked back as she registered four birdies over her next eight holes and finished the first round 4 under. She had five birdies in her second round and is tied with two other golfers for the most birdies in the field of 76 golfers.
GCU sophomore
Ryan Flynn had seven birdies and is tied for fifth at 2 under par. Flynn had three birdies to one bogey over her final 13 holes played to help keep the Lopes atop the leaderboard.
Lopes junior
Leighton Shosted shot even par for the day, with eight birdies including a team-best six in her first round. Like Strole, Shosted recovered after a double bogey on her second hole of the day with three birdies in her ensuing nine holes. She ended the first round with three birdies and four pars over her final seven holes.
GCU senior
Constanza Guerrero is tied for 12th at 1 over. Guerrero tallied eight birdies, including three in her last five holes. Senior teammate
Becca Tschetter is tied for 27th at 6 over and recorded four birdies over Monday's two rounds. Individual entry
Amelia Curtis, a Lopes sophomore, had six birdies and is tied for 53rd at 11 over.
GCU was the only team to record sub-290 team scores in both rounds, including a tournament-best 280 in the first round.
The third and final round starts Tuesday morning. GCU is aiming for its fourth team victory of the season in its seventh event.
