RENO, Nev. — On a pitch-by-committee day in the fourth game of a busy weekend, Grand Canyon's pitching staff combined for a gem to record its fourth shutout of the season in a 9-0 victory over Nevada at Peccole Park on Sunday afternoon.
Lopes pitchers
Hunter Omlid,
Shawn Triplett,
Blake Reilly and
Isaac Lyon combined to limit the Wolf Pack to four hits and two walks.
"Regardless of the results the couple previous weeks, we've liked the intent and the way the pitchers have been going about it," GCU head coach
Gregg Wallis said. "I really felt like the results are going to follow that. It was just another great day of intent. We pitched a lot of guys. They all were commanding the strike zone, they were aggressive, they were attacking. We made plays on defense. That allowed our offense to get going."
GCU's pitching staff is on a 16-inning scoreless streak, the longest since May 2021. The Lopes shut out Nevada for the final seven innings of Saturday's victory.
"We looked fantastic this weekend," senior catcher
Josh Buckley said of Lopes pitching. "Really proud of all of our pitchers. One through all of them. Our bullpen was fantastic. Every guy came in and got their job done."
Triplett improved to 4-1 on the year after tossing a team-high 3 2/3 innings in Sunday's win, allowing only one hit.
"I just went in there trying to throw strikes knowing the defense was going to be able to make plays behind me," Triplett said. "You throw up nine runs in a ballgame, you're going to win most of those games. The fact that they were able to throw up a bunch of those crooked numbers was big time for us."
The offense certainly did its part as well, racking up 15 hits for the ninth time this season. Junior shortstop
Jacob Wilson hit an inside-the-park home run and graduate second baseman
Zack Gregory also homered.
Leading the charge offensively, was freshman first baseman
Zach Yorke who posted a 4-for-4 day with two runs scored and a double. He has reached base in 25 consecutive games
"It doesn't surprise me because he's such a sound, fundamental hitter," Wallis said. "His eyesight at the plate, his awareness of the strike zone. He's a hitter. When he's up there, he gives you a great shot with the discipline and the bat-to-ball ability."
GCU broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Yorke and junior right fielder
Cade Verdusco each hit opposite-field doubles down the lines.
That began a string of five consecutive scoring innings for the Lopes.
Wilson drove in two runs on an inside-the-park home run that escaped the reach of the right fielder and rolled to the corner wall.
Up 3-0, Gregory followed an inning later with a conventional two-run homer to right-center, scoring Buckley who missed a home run by inches and settled for a double.
The Lopes extended the lead to 8-0 in the seventh inning after two runs scored on wild pitches and a third scored on an RBI single by a pinch-hitting
Eli Paton.
GCU sophomore left fielder
Maxwell Andeel doubled twice on Sunday with his second scoring freshman pinch hitter
Nick Arias and accounting for the Lopes' final run of the 9-0 win.
Combined with a Saturday sweep of Long Beach State and Nevada, the Lopes finished the weekend 3-1.
GCU turns its attention to midweek action against Arizona on Tuesday at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.
