Grand Canyon's pitching staff stepped up to limit one of the nation's top-scoring offenses to three runs in 12 innings, and junior infielder
Elijah Buries made it pay off with a walk-off hit to send the Lopes to a 4-3 win over Arizona on Tuesday night.
"It was a great moment," GCU head coach
Gregg Wallis said. "It was special to see. He's been so big for us for two years. That moment might propel him, because we know what he's got in him. We know what he's got in the tank. For me, personally, because I know the heart and soul he's put into this program, it was great to see him get a walk-off against Arizona."
On a GCU Ballpark night with 2,342 fans, neither team could scratch a run across the board in extras until Buries' line drive to left field scored junior
Dustin Crenshaw from second base with ease for the Lopes' fourth consecutive win.
"Everyone's energy out there in the dugout," Buries said. "It's getting late out there, and the guys that aren't in the game, it's hard to stay locked in. But every single one of them was locked in. Our whole team won that game tonight."
Buries hit the second walk-off of his college career. The Lopes (27-19) walked off the Wildcats (23-19) for the second time in three seasons after Channy Ortiz's 10th-inning home run on April 13, 2021.
"Last at bat (in the 10th), I was on the fastball," Buries said. "I pulled it foul. I thought I had a chance to end it there. So coming around that time, I figured they'd go to the slider, and I think they did."
The Lopes used eight pitchers to navigate their fourth 12-inning game of the season. The bullpen combined for 9 2/3 innings of one-run baseball, limiting the nation's No. 7 hitting team to six hits and striking out 10.
"You definitely wouldn't have predicted with the two offenses going that it was going to be a 12-inning, 4-3 ballgame," Wallis said. "Our pitchers stepped up. It was really fun to see. Every guy that got the ball got after it. And that's how they've been doing it now for the past three weeks or so. Even when the results haven't been there, the guys have been getting after it. Tonight was a special night because they did it against a really good offense."
GCU scored three runs in the second inning before the offense went scoreless for the next nine innings. Buries and junior designated hitter
Tyler Wilson, who went 2 for 3 with two walks, singled to open the frame. Buries scored on a sacrifice fly by graduate second baseman
Zack Gregory. Two runs scored on an infield single by junior shortstop
Jacob Wilson, who was safe at first base on all-out slide that resulted in Wilson leaving the game for concussion protocol.
Arizona got two runs back immediately, taking advantage of free passes to score one run on a wild pitch and another on an RBI single.
Neither team scored again until the top of the ninth, when the Wildcats forced extras on a game-tying solo home run by senior third baseman Tony Bullard.
"(Junior reliever Nathan) Ward gives up the home run, but then he didn't let it get further than that," Wallis said. "He gave up the home run and got us in the dugout tied. Everyone we passed the ball to had big moments."
GCU stranded six Arizona runners on base in the ninth through 12th innings, including a bases-loaded 11th to even the teams' series at 3-3 over the past two seasons.
"The one that stands out,
Bryan Webb striking out two guys that I think are going to play in the Big Leagues in Chase Davis and Kiko Romero," Wallis said of the junior left-hander. "That's a huge moment. (Freshman)
Walt Quinn throws two zeroes out there. (Graduate)
Cody Tucker was great today. I don't have enough positive things to say about the contributions from our pitching staff today."
The Lopes threatened in the 10th inning with runners on first and second and one out but were held off the board before Buries' 12th-inning hit ended it.
GCU sophomore right-hander
Carson Ohl tossed a 10-pitch 12th inning and earned his third victory of the season.
The Lopes head out on their longest road trip of the season, a seven-game, three-opponent Texas trip that resumes WAC play on Friday at Tarleton.
