Lopes welcome Wildcats in final home nonconference game

A three-game season series between Grand Canyon and Arizona will conclude where it started nearly two months ago at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark. The Lopes are hosting their final home nonconference matchup of the season for Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. first pitch.

The game will be televised locally on FOX 10 Xtra (Ch. 45 / Cable 9) and stream on ESPN+ with Barry Buetel (play-by-play), Shawn Boskie (analysis) and Kate Longworth (reporter).

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

SCORELESS STREAK: GCU's pitching staff is riding a 16-inning scoreless streak, including the final seven innings of a Saturday win against Nevada and a Sunday shutout of Nevada. It's the Lopes' longest scoreless-inning streak since May 2021. The streak will be put to the test, facing Arizona's offense that ranks No. 23 nationally in scoring at 8.5 runs per game.
LOOKING FOR OFFENSE?: On paper, Tuesday's matchup figures to be a high-scoring affair. The first two meetings between the two clubs this season averaged over 20 combined runs and been separated by only three combined runs. The Lopes (12th, 478) and Wildcats (11th, 479) are both in the nation's top 12 in total hits.
CENTURY MARK: The Lopes' next win at GCU Ballpark will be their 100th. The ballpark opened in 2018, rising around Brazell Field which has remained in its current layout since 1962.

SCOUTING

Still its typical offensive self, Arizona is struggling in 2023 especially in conference play. Under second-year head coach Chip Hale, the Wildcats have already guaranteed no better than a .500 mark in conference play, failing to post a winning mark in Pac-12 action for the first time since 2018.

The Wildcats' offense is as strong as ever, though. Arizona ranks in the nation's top 20 in batting average (.319, seventh) and slugging percentage (.562, 16th).

Arizona entered last weekend with a six-game win streak but was swept at No. 22 Oregon State. The Wildcats have dropped four of their last six Pac-12 series including three as sweeps.

While Arizona has struggled in conference play, the Lopes will be looking to hand the Wildcats their first midweek loss of the season. The Wildcats are 7-0 with wins against the Lopes, California Baptist, Utah Tech, New Mexico State, Arizona State and New Mexico.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Lopes take to the road for their longest trip of the season, a seven-game, three-opponent Texas trip that begins on Friday at Tarleton.
