EL MACERO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team concluded the three day El Macero Classic at the El Macero Country Club Sunday afternoon, placing 15th out of 20 schools.
The Lopes shot +15 for the tournament among a field that included three teams in the top-50 via Golfstat rankings. Of those teams, No. 45 San Diego won the tournament at 14 under with North Texas (-11) and CSU Fullerton (-10) following suit.
Sophomore
Sam Murphy earned a top 20 finish at 1 under par (T-17th). The Galway, Ireland, native shot 72/69/74 for the tourney with 14 birdies, tied for seventh most among the 100-player field. As a team, the Lopes tallied 50 birdies, sixth best among the field.
Junior Tomasso Zorzetto tied for 36th at 2 over par, totaling 10 birdies including four in his second round. Following him was sophomore
Josh McCabe (T-58th/+7), senior
Matthew Braley (T-70th/+9) and junior
Craig Passmore (T-85th/+13). McCabe bounced back from a 5 over start Sunday and birdied four of his next 12 holes to shoot +3 for the day. GCU averaged a 4.63 scorecard on par 5's at the par 72, 7,127-yard course to combine for -22 on such holes.
GCU turns its attention to the WAC Championship tournament in Boulder City, Nev. The three-day championship begins April 28 at Boulder City Golf Club. As of Sunday, April 16, the Lopes rank third best via Golfstat rankings in the WAC at No. 112, trailing only Sam Houston and New Mexico State.

The Grand Canyon men's golf team concluded the second round of the El Macero Classic sitting in a tie for 12th out of 20 with a team score of four over.
Murphy had a successful moving day heading up the leaderboard 13 spots with a score of three under to reach a seven-way tie for ninth place. The sophomore from Galway, Ireland now has ten birdies in the tournament which is a tie for the fourth most.
San Francisco and Loyola Marymount are now tied for first (-9), while CSU Fullerton is in sole possession of third place (-7).
Zorzetto is next on the leaderboard for the Lopes after a second straight day of shooting even. The Italian native birdied four of the last five on the front nine.
GCU now has the fourth most birdies as a team with a total of 36 through the first two days.
Day 1 recap
Grand Canyon had a birdied filled day in the first of three rounds at the El Macero Classic, carding a 2 over team score with 17 birdies to sit 11th out of 20 teams.
The tournament is being held at the El Macero Country Club with UC Davis as the host. GCU's birdie count tied for fourth most among the field with junior
Craig Passmore tied for fifth among the 100-player field with five.
Loyola Marymount leads the tournament at -6, with UCLA (-5) and Sani Diego (-5) in a tie for second.
Two Lopes are in the top-25 as juniors
Tommaso Zorzetto and
Sam Murphy each shot even par to tie for 22nd. The duo combined for seven birdies with five of them on the back nine. Sophomore
Josh McCabe finished +1 for the round in a tie for 41st. McCabe opened up at 4 over par through the first three holes before settling in with three birdies and 12 pars the rest of the way.
Passmore mirrored McCabe's score at +1 (T-41st) as he recorded four of his five birdies on the front nine. Senior
Matthew Braley shot +3 and is in a tie for 62nd as he had two birdies of his own.
GCU averaged a 4.55 score on par 5's, second best only behind CSU Fullerton.
