GCU takes men's, women's track honors with men's field too
The Grand Canyon track and field team has warned the rest of the conference of the times ahead by way of the first WAC weekly awards of the season.
GCU graduate transfer Neysia Howard won the Women's Track Athlete of the Week after a conference-leading performance in the 60-meter dash. Howard, in her first meet as a Lope, went 7.56 seconds in the Spokane Invitational on Saturday. The Tucson native also is the conference best in the 200 with a time of 24.27 seconds.
GCU junior Eric Cabais-Fernandez took the Men's Field Athlete of the Week award after a conference-leading performance of 5.05 meters in the pole vault. Cabais-Fernandez finished third in the conference's indoor season last season.
Lopes senior Erin Brown ran the nation's best 200 time this season at 20.79 seconds to secure the win at the Spokane Invitational and break the school record. In addition, the Dallas native is tied for the fastest time in the conference in the 60 with a time of 6.76 seconds.
Following the winter break, the Lopes will head north to Flagstaff, Arizona, on Jan. 12 for the NAU Axe 'Em Open.
