The Grand Canyon swimming and diving team put the conference on notice by winning three of the four WAC weekly honors in the first week of the season.
GCU junior
Sam Jennings won Men's Swimmer of the Week after a weekend when he had seven wins in Idaho.
The Houston native won the 100-yard backstroke (48.66 seconds and 48.59) and 200 backstroke (1:46.43 and 1:46.02) on Friday and Saturday, as well as wins in the 200 medley relay both days (1:31.59 and 1:32.07) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:23.67).
Lopes sophomore
Paula Martinez Moreno won Women's Swimmer of the Week after having six wins and two individual second-place finishes at the three-team meet in Idaho.
The Spaniard won the 200 butterfly (2:01.64), 200 backstroke (2:03.25) and the 100 butterfly on Friday and Saturday (55.19 and 55.51). Martinez Moreno also was part of the winning 200 medley relay both days (1:41.91 and 1:43.09). In her packed weekend schedule, Martinez Moreno placed second in the 200 backstroke on Friday (2:03.21) and 100 backstroke on Saturday (57.87). To add to the early list of accolades, her times in the 50, 100, and 200 butterfly lead the WAC.
GCU senior
Reece Robles won Men's Diver of the Week after placing first in the 3-meter competition and second in the 1-meter competition last weekend in Idaho.
The El Cajon, California, native scored 294.83 points in the 1-meter event, which was second to fellow Lopes diver
Isaac Poole. In the 3-meter event, Robles tallied 322.85 points to place first.
The Lopes next head to Riverside, California, to compete against Seattle U, California Baptist and Denver on Friday and Saturday.
