EUGENE, Ore. — Grand Canyon's outdoor track and field schedule wrapped at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field on Thursday.
The Lopes sent three student-athletes to compete at the national championships: sophomore
Gabriel Binion in long jump, junior
Marten Gasparini in javelin and senior
Alyson Schwartz in pole vault. Binion and Gasparini wrapped their seasons on Wednesday when the men's events began. Schwartz followed on Thursday.
Binion's top mark in the long jump was 7.38 meters to finish 19th and earn All-America honorable-mention status. The Sydney, Australia, native's personal best was set on April 30 to win the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona, with a mark of 7.68 meters.
Gasparini posted a mark of 67.51 meters in the javelin to finish 17th, narrowly missing a spot as an All-American on the second team but settling for honorable mention. Entering the championships, Gasparini's personal best was set on April 22 in Tempe at 76.28 meters.
Schwartz wrapped GCU's participation on Thursday, clearing the pole vault bar at a height of 12 feet, 9 1/2 inches. She could not clear the bar at 13 feet, 3 1/2 inches in her three attempts and finished in 23rd place. Her career best checked in at 13 feet 7 inches at the 2019 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Orem, Utah.
GCU concluded an outdoor season that saw it claim
a second consecutive WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship on the men's side and send a program-best 16 competitors to the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
