Brooke Andersen became a national champion Thursday when she won the hammer throw at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Nathan Ott (at right in photo), qualified to be part of the U.S. national team that will compete in the World Athletics Championships next month at the same Hayward Field venue where she captured her first national title on Thursday.
Andersen's winning throw of 77.96 meters (225 feet, 9 inches) was nearly 2 meters better than runner-up Janee Kassanavoid and more than 4 meters ahead of third-place Anette Echikunwoke. She recorded four throws that would have won the competition, including a heave of 77.91. She also holds the world's No. 1 throw for the year with a 79.02-meter throw on April 30 in Tucson, Arizona.
"It was a very consistent series and I'm very, very happy with it," Andersen told
Track and Field News of her national championship. "The first one didn't go as planned. I fouled it, but I'm just happy I could execute when I needed to get a good mark — and a fair mark — and build from there."
Andersen, who joined head coach
Tom Flood's GCU staff in October to work with throwers, has coincided her training at GCU to build on her 10th-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics in July. She also had been the U.S. Olympic Trials runner-up in June.
The World Athletics Championships will be July 15-24 at Oregon, marking the first time that the U.S. has hosted the event.
"Couldn't be more excited to get to compete at Worlds in a few weeks back here at Hayward field with this great group of women!" Andersen posted on her Instagram. "Excited for more of the Hayward magic that's to come."
