SEATTLE — The Grand Canyon men take the WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships lead into the meet's final day of action after junior
Aidan Diggs and sophomore
Jorg Vanlierde claimed the top two spots in the decathlon on Friday.
Diggs, the Goodyear Millennium High School graduate, repeated as WAC decathlon champion with a 10-point edge on Valierde, who is from Belgium. Diggs finished with 6,902 points, outperforming last year's winning total of 6,848.
The decathletes' finishes and wins by senior
Jorden Okyere in the hammer throw (59.69 meters) and shot put (17.26 meters) and sophomore
Gabriel Binion in the long jump (7.53 meters) helped give GCU a meet-leading 62 points through six events. The WAC Championships ends Saturday in Seattle with California Baptist entering the final day with 42 points and Utah Valley in third with 40.
The Lopes women are in third place through eight events with 43 points, trailing Abilene Christian's 54 and leader Stephen F. Austin's 74.
Top early GCU finishers included senior
Alyson Schwartz taking second in the pole vault (3.9 meters), senior
Samaria McDonald placing second in the hammer throw (61.61 meters) and junior
Kelly Moodry and fifth-year senior
Alexa Hokanson finishing third and fourth in the 800-meter run.
