Oloyede named WAC indoor's Athlete of Year

Phoenix native broke 38-year-old WAC weight throw record, enters NCAAs as top seed
Grand Canyon senior thrower Israel Oloyede was named WAC Indoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year in a vote of the conference's head coaches.
On Jan. 22, Oloyede broke a 38-year-old conference record with a weight throw of 24.45 meters at the MLK Jr. Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His outstanding throw was the nation's top mark at the time and held through the conclusion of the season. His throw shattered the previous conference record of 23.95 meters, set by UTEP's Toren Johnson in 1984.
Oloyede was named the National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Jan. 25.
Oloyede also took the WAC crown at the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, recording a throw of 22.89 meters to help lead the Lopes to their sixth consecutive men's team title.
With the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships set for March 11-12 in Birmingham, Alabama, Oloyede enters as the field's top seed in the weight throw and will look to become the first GCU Division I student-athlete to win an individual national championship.
Oloyede transferred from Arizona to GCU at the semester break. For the Wildcats, Oloyede was a national runner-up in the weight throw last year.
