TUCSON, Ariz. — The Grand Canyon track and field team opened its outdoor season by competing in the Willie Williams Classic, hosted by Arizona. GCU had three individuals post top-10 national marks during the Friday-Saturday meet.
"It was a solid season opener for us as a team," Lopes assistant coach
Sara Slattery said. "It was great weather, and we had solid performances all around. There were many personal records across our roster."
The Lopes ended the first outdoor meet leading the WAC in 10 men's events and eight women's events.
On the men's side, junior
Marten Gasparini won the javelin with a mark of 68.43 meters. The native of Alture di Ruda, Italy, blew away the other 22 competitors in the event, finishing in first by over 6.5 meters. Gasparini's mark ranks No. 7 in the nation.
For the women's team, junior
Kelly Moodry and fifth-year
Alexa Hokanson turned in impressive times, finishing within 1.5 seconds of each other in the 800-meter run. Moodry's time of 2 minutes, 5.67 seconds ranks third in the nation while Hokanson's mark of 2:06.95 ranks fifth. Moody and Hokanson ran the 800 on Saturday after competing in other events on Friday.
Lopes senior
Landon Rast also put his name in the GCU record book with a school-best time in the 1,500-meter run. Rast's mark of 3:49.72 passed the previous mark held by
Jacob Lewis at 3:49.85.
"We look forward to next weekend where we will split squads," Slattery said. "We're headed to the Texas Relays, the Bobcat Invitational and the ASU Invitational."
