The Grand Canyon men's golf team began hosting its lone tournament of the season by moving within a shot of the lead after Monday's first round of the GCU Invitational.
The Lopes welcomed 23 teams to Phoenix for the 54-hole tournament. After the first round, GCU was tied for second place with UT Arlington at 5 under and sitting only one stroke behind leaders Southern Mississippi.
Three of eight Lopes competitors were in the top 15 after the first round. Junior
Matthew Braley was tied for first after scoring 5 under par in his opening round, which included four birdies on his final six holes. Graduate
Zac Owens, who is playing as an individual, was tied for sixth after scoring 3 under par and sophomore
Nicky Kling finished the first round at 1 under par.
GCU freshman
Sam Murphy was tied for 27th place after finishing the first round at even par. Ten spots below Murphy, the final four Lopes (
Craig Passmore,
Matteo Cristoni,
Jacob Lackey, and
Johannes Hounsgaard) each finished the first round at 1 over par.
The Lopes will finish the second round and play the third on Tuesday with a 7:15 a.m. shotgun start.
