CLEMSON, S.C. — Grand Canyon's indoor track and field season began over a month earlier than the previous norm, but the Lopes wasted no time in getting acclimated to a new season with impressive results at the Clemson Opener on Friday.
"I'm completely thrilled with our performances today at the Clemson Opener," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said. "This meet is six weeks earlier than we usually start. That meet at Northern Arizona is usually just a rust buster, so we definitely busted a lot of rust today."
Junior
Keira Christie-Galloway, a transfer from Arizona State, made her presence known in her first meet in the GCU colors. She broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.39 seconds.
The Lopes finished the meet with a victory in the men's 1,600-meter relay with the second-fastest time in school history. The team of graduates
Mariano Hernandez,
Maj Williams,
Bryson Benjamin and
Calvin Wilson clocked in at 3 minutes, 12.10 seconds to defeat second-place South Carolina and third-place Clemson.
"Williams ran an amazing anchor leg in the 4x400 to run down South Carolina at the finish line," Flood said.
GCU also had success in the men's 200- and 400-meter runs. Graduate
Kyle De Moica was runner-up in the 200 at 21.56. Williams was runner-up in the 400 at 48.23. The 400 was littered with Lopes as GCU held all spots from second through fifth (Williams, Hernandez, Benjamin, Wilson).
"I'm really excited for the upcoming season," Flood said. "I can't wait to see all the continued success of this amazing group of student-athletes."
The Lopes have to wait 42 days for their next competition with the Northern Arizona Axe 'Em Challenge on Jan. 13 in Flagstaff.
