After an impressive weekend in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Grand Canyon track and field program collected several weekly honors on Tuesday.
Most notably, GCU senior thrower
Israel Oloyede was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Athlete of the Week for Division I men. His weight throw of 24.45 meters on Saturday broke a 38-year-old WAC record and leads the nation this season.
Oloyede also was named the WAC's Men's Field Athlete of the Week. The Lopes made it a sweep of the WAC weekly men's awards with junior
Aidan Diggs earning WAC Track Athlete of the Week.
Diggs had two top-three finishes at the MLK Jr. Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. He finished third in the 60-meter hurdles (7.93) and 400-meter run (49.08). His 60-meter hurdles time puts him first in this season's WAC performance list and 42nd in the NCAA.
On the women's side, junior
Kelly Moodry was named WAC Track Athlete of the Week. Moodry led the Lopes with a win at the MLK Jr. Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. She won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 7.09 seconds. Her time leads the WAC and is 10th on the NCAA performance list.
The Lopes are headed back to Albuquerque this weekend for the New Mexico Team Open.
