The Grand Canyon track and field squad is readying for its second weekend of competition in the indoor season. The Lopes will head to two meets, splitting the squad for a Friday meet in Flagstaff, Arizona, and a Saturday meet in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Northern Arizona will again host a Friday meet: the Lumberjack Team Challenge. New Mexico will host the MLK Jr. Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
"A small crew will be competing again at NAU," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said. "The bulk of our team will be competing on Saturday at the University of New Mexico."
GCU broke three school records in Flagstaff last weekend in the season-opening meet. Two performances — from
Jorden Okyere and
Atena Rayson — earned WAC Athlete of the Week honors.
With the majority of the team headed east to Albuquerque, the Lopes will get a chance to preview the new site of this season's WAC Indoor Championships.
"We are particularly thrilled to be competing at UNM because it will be the site of this year's WAC Indoor Championships," Flood said. "It will also be the first chance for some of our athletes to compete in their normal race distances. We all are excited to see the what type of performances our athletes put up for the 200-, 400- and 800-meter races."
GCU will also get its first look at an exciting newcomer in a competition. Senior thrower
Israel Oloyede transferred at the semester break from Arizona.
"It will mark the season debut, in a GCU uniform, for
Israel Oloyede in the men's hammer throw," Flood said. "There is a huge buzz in our GCU track and field family to watch him throw this Saturday."
Friday's meet gets underway at noon in Flagstaff while Saturday's events begin at 9 a.m. in Albuquerque.
