Emily Muteti was named to the Kenya swimming team that will represent her country at this summer's Olympics in Tokyo.
"We are very proud of Emily," GCU head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "Representing Kenya at the Olympics is a goal Emily has worked very hard to make a reality for these past four years at GCU. It has been a pleasure to work with her and help her along this path. Emily is an exemplary student and athlete and will represent Kenya honorably."

The soon-to-be Lopes senior was scheduled to sport the Kenyan flag at the 2020 Olympics before the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the 32nd Summer Games.
Muteti holds the Kenyan national records in the 50- and 100-meter butterfly, as well as the 800-meter freestyle.
In a release from the Kenya Swimming Federation, the selection of Muteti followed the directions provided by the international swimming governing body FINA.
The selection was based on her top-ranking FINA points from qualifying events and her participation in the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwanju, Korea. Muteti achieved the top 698 FINA points in the 50-meter freestyle at the 12th African Games in Casablanca, Morocco.
This past shortened season at GCU saw Muteti take advantage of training to capture a pair of WAC Swimmer of the Week awards with just three dual meets and a conference championship in 2020-21. She was crowned the WAC champion in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.90 seconds in February.
