COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Senior
Ethan Harris is the second Lope this season to punch his ticket to nationals in Eugene, Oregon. Harris jumped 2.19-meters at the NCAA West regionals on Friday and placed ninth. He was one of eleven high jumpers to advance to finals.
"I'm very proud of both Ethan and Coach (Chris) Riggs on their fantastic season," said head coach Tom Flood. "Ethan had a couple of misses on his opening height in today's competition, but they both remained calm. After the opening height Ethan began to do want he has done all season, and make bars on his first attempts."
As a first-year Division I student-athlete, Harris has brought forth major successes with a No. 2 West ranking and No. 6 national ranking entering the meet. The ranking was based off his 2.26-meter jump that he cleared earlier this month at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson. Harris also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials with that high jump.
During the first meet of the season at the GCU Indoor Collegiate Open, Harris jumped 2.14 meters to set his first school record. He proceeded to reset the record at 2.15 meters a few meets later in the Canyon Invitational. Two weeks later, Harris surpassed his personal best by 0.11 meters to jump his qualifying mark of 2.26 meters.
"He has put himself in a great a great position to score at the NCAA Championships in two weeks," Flood said.
Harris will compete at Oregon's Hayward Field twice in the month of June for the NCAA Championships and the U.S. Olympic Trials.
