COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Grand Canyon senior pole vaulter
Madelyn Lundberg made one of her final times competing for GCU an unforgettable experience, as she punched her ticket to Eugene, Oregon, for the NCAA Championships.
Lundberg made history for the GCU track and field team by becoming the program's first female to qualify for the NCAA Championships, following her 4.27-meter jump on Thursday at the NCAA West regional.
"I am absolutely thrilled for Maddie and Coach (Todd) Lehman," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said. "It was a different fall for Maddie with her having to student-teach. But between the two responsibilities, they were able to keep a consistent practice schedule and it all came together today."
Lundberg placed third at the NCAA West Preliminary Round and broke her personal school record by 0.12 meters. She went into the regional meet ranked 26th with her previous season best of 4.15 meters.
Through the duration of her jumps, Lundberg cleared every bar except for her first bar at 4.17 meters. She cleared the next bar at 4.17 meters and proceeded to clear her first attempt at 4.27 meters.
"It is even more special that Maddie is a local Phoenix student-athlete," Flood said of the Sandra Day O'Connor High School graduate.
At the Canyon Invitational, Lundberg jumped 4.15 meters, which was her qualifying mark for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. She also has won WAC Field Athlete of the Week twice this season.
Lundberg will compete in the NCAA Championships on June 9-12 at Oregon's Hayward Field.
