BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team put together a strong rally on the final day of the WAC Championship but came up one stroke short on Sunday.
GCU shot 1 under par on Sunday to finish the tournament at 7 under par but was edged by New Mexico State at 8 under par for the Lopes' third consecutive close runner-up finish at the WAC Championship.

Jamie Boggs, and coaches Clayton (Sikorski) and Jesse (Mueller) for putting us in a great position this year."
After starting the day six shots behind New Mexico State, the Lopes battled and took the lead late Sunday afternoon. The Aggies' 856 edged the Lopes' 857 on the final hole with Utah Valley (863) finishing third.
GCU seniorÂ
Michael Salazar carded the low round in the field with a 4-under 68. The senior recorded a team-high seven birdies during his final trip around Boulder Creek Golf Club. He finished fifth overall with a 212 (4 under par).
Lopes junior Matt Polivka played in the final group and ended the day in a tie for seventh place (214). His final round included an eagle and a pair of birdies.
Freshman
Nicky Kling chipped in for eagle on No. 13 and finished in 11th place (216).
Other GCU results included sophomore
Matthew Braley's 219 and senior
Trevor Lampson's 226.
The individual medalist went to Gabe Lysen of Utah Valley (208).
Day 2
GCU battled through tough conditions and remained within striking distance after Saturday's second round of the WAC Championship.
The Lopes remained in second place with a total of 570, just six shots behind leader New Mexico State. Utah Valley was the only team to finish at even par for the day at Boulder Creek Golf Club and sits one shot behind the Lopes in third place.
GCU was led by Polivka and Lampson. The duo fired matching rounds of 73 (1 over par). Polivka will be featured in the final group of the championship as GCU's top player in seventh place. The Muskego, Wisconsin, native had a team-high three birdies in the second round.
Braley finished with a 74 and is in a tie for 13th place. Kling is tied for eighth place after a 75 in second-round action.
Salazar battled after a tough opening nine holes to finish the day in 12th place. Salazar finished with a 77 but played the back nine at 1 under par, the Lopes' low back nine of the day.
Garrison Smith of New Mexico State leads the championship with a 135 (9 under par). Gabe Lysen of Utah Valley is next at 136, followed by James Mackie of California Baptist at 140.
With winds of more than 20 mph all day, the second-round stroke average was 75.42, over three shots more than the opening round.
The Lopes' final-round tee times will begin at 9:25 a.m. (Phoenix time) on Sunday. GCU will be paired with New Mexico State and Utah Valley.

Day 1
GCU completed the first day of the three-round WAC Championship in second place, two shots behind New Mexico State.
The Lopes finished Friday at 275 (13 under par), just two shots behind leader New Mexico State at Boulder Creek Golf Club. Seattle U ended the day in third place at 7 under par.
GCU got off to a quick start, led by Salazar. He caught fire during a five-hole stretch and played 5 under par on holes four through eight. Salazar shot a team-best round of 67 (5 under par) and is tied for third place, trailing leader Garrison Smith of New Mexico State by three strokes.
Kling fired a 68 (4 under par) and is tied for fifth place. Kling's day included four birdies and an eagle, which made him 4 under after his first five holes.
Polivka is tied for eighth after carding a 69 (3 under par). Polivka's round included four birdies on the front nine and six total.
Braley scrambled to save par on the 18th hole to finish his day at 1 under par (71), putting four Lopes in the top half of the 40-player field.
Lampson rebounded from a tough opening nine holes to fire a 35 (1 under par) on the back nine, matching Salazar for the Lopes' best back-nine score. He finished at 76.
The field average score was 72.08 with 22 of the 40 players firing par or better.
