BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team finished runner-up at the WAC Championship on Wednesday at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada, with individuals finishing in second and third places.
"Today, we showed that we can compete," GCU head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "I do think we had a little bit of nerves and the wind, we let that get to us a bit today. We will learn from this and move on. I know we have a lot of returners who will be back out here for vengeance."
With winds over 20 mph all day, the Lopes and Aggies battled throughout the day exchanging leads. In the end, New Mexico State finished with an 873 score, edging GCU by seven strokes.
"Both Payton (Fehringer) and Siri (
Siripatsorn Patchana)Â had strong tournaments," Giesecke said. "They have a lot of tournaments this summer, some big events. Hopefully, they can use this momentum for summer golf and keep pushing and working hard to prepare for next year."
GCU finished with two players in the top five. Fehringer, a junior, claimed a second-place finish at 1 under par (215). She was one shot behind medalist and Henderson, Nevada, native Victoria Estrada of Utah Valley.
Patchana, a senior, tied for third place at 2 over par (218).
GCU freshman
Carly Strole also recorded a top-10 finish, tying for 10th at 6 over par (222).
Lopes senior
Carolina Sandstrom and freshman
Lani Luafalealo tied for 23rd place in the field of 43 players.
The final round average score was 79.81. Only two players fired rounds of par-or-better on Wednesday.
GCU and NMSU exchanged leads throughout the first nine holes. The Lopes led by a shot on the back nine before the Aggies held off the Lopes over the final six holes.
This season's All-WAC awards are scheduled to be released on Friday.
Day 2
GCU made a big move on moving day, firing a program-best 282 (6 under par) in Tuesday's second round of the WAC Championship. The Lopes enter Wednesday's final round with a two-stroke lead over New Mexico State.
"Overall, I'm very proud of the team today," Giesecke said. "It got tough out there, but they fought through. They stayed patient. That's something that we talked about. Playing our own game and do what we came here to do. Stick to our game plan. They learned a lot from yesterday, a couple of them left some strokes out there and they came in wanting to get those strokes back today."
GCU's Fehringer leads the tournament by two shots at Boulder Creek Golf Club. Fehringer fired her second consecutive sub-par round (71), good for a two-day total of 140 (4 under par) entering Wednesday's final round.
"I'm super proud of Payton," Giesecke said. "She's had it going the last two days. I do believe she has left some shots out there. I know the competitor in her will drive her and get her going for tomorrow."
The big move of the day was by Luafalealo. After an opening-round 81, Luafalealo fired a team-best 69.
Patchana moved into a tie for third place after finishing Tuesday with a 70. Strole tied with Patchana with a 143 (1 under par) total through 36 holes.
Sandstrom fired her second consecutive 77 and is in a tie for 24th place.
"We left some shots out there on Monday and today," Giesecke said. "I know we will take that information from the last two days and use that for tomorrow."
The top three teams will tee off Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. (Phoenix time) in final-round action at Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Lopes (572) are paired with players from New Mexico State (574) and Seattle U (595).
Day 1
GCU completed the first day of the WAC Championship in second place, just three shots off the pace by leader New Mexico State. Fehringer leads the championship's individual race after an opening round of 69 on Monday.
The Aggies fired a team score of 287 (1 under par) while the Lopes finished at 290 with two rounds remaining. Seattle U and Utah Valley are tied for third at 297.
Fehringer got the Lopes started quickly by firing a 33 (3 under par) on her first nine holes to lead the tournament. She recovered from a double bogey on No. 10 by carding birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to finish at 3 under par, one stroke ahead of New Mexico State's Amelia McKee and two strokes head of a four-player pack tied for third.
With just six players under par in the field, Strole recorded an eagle and birdie to finish in that group at 1 under par. The eagle on the par-five 16th hole was the only eagle in the first round.
Rounding out the GCU scoring, Patchana finished with a 73 while Sandstrom carded a 77. Luafalealo shot an 81, which did not count toward the team score.
