Okyere, Xydona receive conference recognition
The Grand Canyon track and field teams were awarded a pair of WAC weekly honors. Junior Jorden Okyere was named the WAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week and senior Niki Xydona was named the WAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week. The honors are awarded based off their weekend performances at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego.
Earning his second straight WAC weekly award, Okyere proceeded to break a school record in discus at the Aztec Invitational on Saturday with a throw of 51.59 meters, a WAC season best. In the hammer, Okyere placed third by throwing 59.99 meters, which is also first in the WAC this season. Okyere threw 16.42 meters in the shot put to rank fourth in the WAC this season.
Xydona, the 2019 WAC heptathlon champion, competed in her first heptathlon in about two years. She broke the GCU school record and posted a WAC seasonal best in the heptathlon with 5,073 points. The Greece native's score ranks 13th best in Division I this season.
The Lopes will compete in their third home meet of the year on Saturday.
