The Grand Canyon women's golf team ended the first day of the GCU Invitational in first place and with Lopes Through 36 holes, GCU freshman
Lani Luafalealo leading the home tournament at 4 under par after Monday's two rounds.
Luafaleao leads senior teammate
Alexis Jones by one shot entering Tuesday's final round at GCU Championship Golf Course. Luafaleao was the only player to shoot below par in both rounds Monday and one of four players to card an eagle, which she made on the par-five 10th hole of her second round.
Jones was the first-round leader with a 67 (5 under par), which tied for the third-lowest Lopes round in the tournament's history. Jones was 5 under par after her first 11 holes.
Tuesday's final 18 holes will feature a team race that starts with GCU (577) and California Baptist (579) ahead of Northern Arizona and Seattle (594 each).
The final round will be a rematch of last year's tournament leaders. The Lopes defeated the Lancers by one shot for the team title in the last action of the 2019-20 season.
With all 12 GCU players in competition this week, the Lopes starting five included Luafalealo (first place, 4 under par), senior
Siripatsorn Patchana (tied for third, 2 under par), freshman
Constanza Guerrero (tied for 16th, 3 over par), freshman
Carly Strole (tied for 24th, 6 over par) and junior
Payton Fehringer (tied for 24th, 6 over par).
GCU's individual entries feature Jones (second, 3 under par), senior
Carolina Sandstrom (tied for fifth, 1 under par), freshman
Becca Tschetter (tied for 13th, 2 over par), sophomore
Carmen Belmonte (tied for 21st, 5 over par), junior
Madison Voisard (tied for 21st, 5 over par), senior
Alexis Linam (tied for 24th, 6 over par) and sophomore
Reyna Hernandez (tied for 51st, 12 over par).
GCU is back in action Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start at GCU Championship Golf Course.
