The Grand Canyon women's swimming team begins its quest at the WAC Championships on Wednesday through Saturday at Dixie State's Human Performance Center in St. George, Utah.
The Lopes enter the championships with three dual meets under their belts. GCU lost at Arizona (Dec. 3-4), tied California Baptist (Dec. 12) and defeated Dixie State (Jan. 16). GCU's past two head-to-head meets (Jan. 30 and Feb. 6) were canceled.
The Lopes finished third at last year's WAC Championships with 561 points. GCU finished behind runner-up California Baptist (579 points) and Northern Arizona (677.5), which won its seventh championship in a row.
The diving portion of this year's WAC Championships will be held Feb. 25-27 at NAU in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Entering the championships, the Lopes own several top times in the conference. Freshman
Madeline Vindiola tops the WAC in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 52.48 seconds. She also sports a conference-best time in the 1,650 freestyle (17:24.45). Junior
Robyn Edwards owns the WAC's top 200 backstroke time (2:01.12), while redshirt junior
Emily Muteti posted the fastest 100 butterfly time (54.44).
The daily schedule includes a morning session (preliminaries) and an evening session (finals). Finals will be held Wednesday (200 medley relay, 800 freestyle relay), Thursday (200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle), Friday (400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 400 medley relay) and Saturday (1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay).
Individual events are scored on 16 places: eight places for finals (20-17-16-15-14-13-12-11) and eight places for consolation finals (9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1). Relays count for twice as many points.
The men's team will compete in its WAC Championships on Feb. 24-27 in Las Vegas. Its divers also will be at the Feb. 25-27 WAC Championships in Flagstaff.
