Former Grand Canyon golfer
Jake Chanen captured the 96th Arizona Amateur on Saturday at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree. The win was Chanen's second Arizona Amateur title after winning the event in 2018 at Tonto Verde Golf Club in Rio Verde.
"I'm really happy for Jake and his family," GCU head coach
Mark Mueller said. "Winning two Arizona Ams is a really big deal. It's been a lot of fun watching him play (Desert Forest) during qualifying as a freshman and how he played it now. It's just such a difficult course. Winning at Desert Forest makes it sweeter. A cool day for GCU golf."

With the championship match tied on the 18th hole, Chanen pushed his drive right and had to chip back to the fairway. Meanwhile, opponent Chris Kamin hit the fairway to gain the upper hand in the match.
Kamin's approach missed the green and he had to chip on with his third shot. Chanen's third shot from 143 yards was on target, just 2 feet away. Kamin two-putted for bogey while Chanen converted his putt for par and the win.
It was the only time Chanen led in the match the entire day. Kamin's largest lead (2 up) came after the 12th hole. Chanen rallied to tied after winning the 13th and 16th holes and then the GCU graduate won the tournament on the 18th hole.
When all was said and done, Chanen played 146 holes of golf over six days. After finishing in the top 10 during the two days of qualifying for match play, Chanen went the distance in nearly every match-play round.
GCU was also well-represented by current players, including upperclassmen
Trevor Lampson and
Matthew Braley. Both Lopes advanced to the quarterfinals of match play.
"It was great to see our current guys Trevor and Matt make it to the final eight," Mueller said. "Both have had great summers and to see them keep that up is outstanding. It was really cool to see three guys from our program in the quarterfinals."
The summer slate continues for several Lopes with the 77th Arizona Open Championship starting Monday at Superstition Mountain Golf Club in Gold Canyon.
