Madison Voisard of the Grand Canyon women's golf team posted a runner-up finish at the Arizona Golf Association State Amateur Match Play Championship at Desert Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale.
"I feel very proud for making a lot of progress from the drills and practice I have been doing because I know it has paid off," Voisard said. "I could have done better in some areas, but overall I can see the improvement."
Voisard reached the championship round with a 1-up quarterfinal victory against Illinois-Chicago's Brooke Bayer and a 19-hole semifinal win against Arizona State's Breyana Mathews. Xavier senior Mikayla Fitzpatrick, the 2019 AGA Women's Player of the Year, won the championship match despite a battle from Voisard. The GCU junior took a 1-up lead through eight holes, before a stretch when Fitzpatrick won three straight holes to take a 2-up lead after 11 holes. Fitzpatrick birded the 14th and 15th holes to clinch a 4-and-3 win.Â
The event started with Voisard earning one of the eight qualifying spots by tying for fourth in the stroke-play competition Thursday, when she recorded four birdies and finished with a 2-over round of 74 at Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course.Â
In her quarterfinal match, Voisard claimed the 1-up victory on the final hole with a par. She trailed Beyer 1 up after eight holes, tied the match on the ninth hole and then never trailed on the back nine.
Voisard needed to rally in her semifinal match against Matthews, tying the match on the 18th hole and winning on the first extra hole with a birdie.
"This is an awesome tournament," Voisard said. "Match play is fun. My opponent today, I have to tip my hat to her. She had a great finish with two birdies. You just have to do your best and see what happens."
