Lopes earn WAC Divers of the Year

Toscani, Castellanos win; Shafer tabbed as top men's coach
Grand Canyon senior Pietro Hufnagel Toscani and freshman Sara Lameiro Castellanos were named WAC Divers of the Year and Lopes diving head coach Hunter Shafer was named WAC Men's Diving Coach of the Year, the conference announced Thursday.
At the WAC Championships, Toscani won two of the three diving events. He placed first in the 1- and 3-meter dives and finished third in the platform dives. The senior was named WAC Diver of the Week five times this season.
"Pietro has worked hard the past two years and has improved his skills significantly," Shafer said. "His wins are well deserved and he competed very well. This a great way to go out in his senior year. We will miss him next year."
Lameiro Castellanos also won two of the three diving events at the WAC Championships. She finished first in the 3-meter and platform dives and placed third in the 1-meter dive.
"Sara came in as a freshman as a great diver, but has improved over the course of the season," Shafer said. "In a tough competition, she was determined to not be beat and had great results. She is a great teammate and very supportive of everyone on our team. I'm looking forward to the next three years with her and I think she will have great success and be a great leader on our team."
In just his second season at GCU, Shafer was named WAC Men's Diving Coach of the Year. The Lopes won four out of the six diving events at the conference meet and placed third in the other two.
"I thank my WAC coaches for this but it really comes down to the student-athletes," Shafer said. "The team, as a whole, did well and I thank them for their hard work and effort all season. I thought we dove well and am excited they are all a part of our program."
